About us

The mission of Chukchi Sea Watch is to protect communities and ecosystems of the Chukchi Sea and surrounding areas from potential threats, including but not limited to, climate change, industrial development and increased shipping.

Chukchi Sea Watch is a collaborative of Iñupiat leaders from North Slope communities, Alaskan citizens and scientists and others who care about the Chukchi Sea.

Due to the immediate high risk of a catastrophic oil spill, the absence of infrastructure in the Arctic and lack of industry preparedness we are currently focused on monitoring offshore oil and gas leasing, including Royal Dutch Shell's Arctic offshore exploration campaign.

Our priority is to strengthen the capacity of effected communities to independently monitor oil and gas development impacts, enforcement of existing legal and regulatory protections, and to identify and implement new measures needed to fill gaps.

We also support local conservation and sustainable development initiatives including marine reserve nominations, small-scale ecotourism and renewable energy microgrid village projects.
